Introduction
Our trip to Bandhavgarh National Park was one of those journeys that stayed with us long after it ended. Traveling with kids always needs a balance of comfort and experience, and our stay at Mahua Kothi, A Taj Safari offered exactly that. The nearest airport is Jabalpur, followed by a scenic 4-hour drive to the property, slowly transitioning from city roads to the calm of the forest.
A Warm Welcome & First Impressions
One of the most memorable first impressions was the warm welcome by the staff—greeting us with a traditional hand-waving gesture, a signature style across Taj Safaris. We were offered a refreshing welcome drink, instantly setting the tone for a relaxed stay. With only 12 cottages, the property feels exclusive and peaceful, attracting not just Indian travelers but also many international guests.
Staying in a Rustic Mud Cottage
We stayed in a beautifully designed mud cottage—rustic yet incredibly comfortable. It felt different from typical luxury hotels, bringing us closer to nature while still offering all the comforts needed, especially when traveling with kids. Our 2-night stay felt just right to experience both relaxation and adventure.

Slow Mornings & Property Experiences
Mornings here are slow and peaceful, starting with tea served in the room. Since traveling with kids makes early morning safaris challenging (getting them ready is a task in itself!), we chose to spend our mornings exploring the property instead—and honestly, it was just as rewarding. We: Walked around lush greenery Explored the vegetable garden grown within the property Cycled around using the available bicycles Took the kids for a swim Spent time in the library filled with books on wildlife For those heading out for morning safaris, the property even arranges breakfast in the wilderness—something truly special.

Food Experience
All meals are included, which makes sense given the remote jungle location.
Breakfast had a generous spread:
- English breakfast
- Fresh fruits
- South Indian options like dosas & idlis
- Parathas
Lunch was simpler but satisfying, with:
- 2–3 curries Dal, rice Chapatis Curd, raita Desserts
What stood out was their flexibility—they happily prepared custom meals for kids, like khichdi without spices or mashed potatoes.

Safari Experience
Our afternoon safari was an experience in itself. The jeeps, mostly owned by the property, added to the premium feel. While we didn’t spot a tiger, the forest didn’t disappoint. We saw: Blue bulls Spotted deer Hyenas Wild dogs The dense greenery, fresh air, and sounds of flowing water made the experience truly immersive—reminding us that safaris are not just about tiger sightings. After returning, we were welcomed with warm towels and hot lemon water—a thoughtful touch after a long ride.
Evenings to Remember
Evenings were magical. One night featured a tribal dance performance around a bonfire by local artists, giving us a glimpse into the region’s culture.
The property also offers a relaxing high tea in the evening, served with a selection of snacks- making it a perfect way to unwind after a day in the jungle.
Dinner settings kept changing, which made each evening feel unique. One of the most special dinners was served under a tree, surrounded by lanterns and firelight. We even got to try local delicacies like mahua ki kheer, which added a beautiful local touch to the experience.
Why It Works So Well for Families?
What stood out most was how family-friendly the experience was. Flexible meal options for kids Plenty of space to explore Activities within the property Not overly hectic It allowed us to enjoy the trip without feeling rushed or stressed.
